For fun you can visit some of the night clubs, caffe bars, Waterfront very known and recently reconstructed. For recreation you can visit Marjan forest by foot and enjoy its view or go swimm at one of the beaches. Most known beach is Bacvice. It is a sand beach not far from the center.

MARJAN FOREST


Marjan Forest Park is green oasis with promenades, solariums, playgrounds, vista points, nature paths and Split Zoo. There is a great view on Split, Kozjak, Mosor, Trogir, Ciovo, Brac, Hvar from the top of the Marjan. Mountaineers and free climbers use southern cliffs for recreation and training. There is traditional Marjan Cup kept every April. Split inhabitants are very proud of Marjan and they cherish it.

HISTORY


There are foundings that show that there was life in this area in old Roman time. In 295. Roman emperor Gaius Valerius Aurelius Diocletianus built palace where he moved in 305. He was persecutor of Christians and he considered himself as god. The Palace has trapezoid shape and area of 28 900 m2. In 7th century palace developed into the city. Salona`s inhabitants ensconced into it when they were running away from Avars and Slavs. The Diocletian`s palace is under protection of UNESCO World Heritage List. After 7th century Split starts developing outside of the walls. In 12th century Split was under Croatian-Hungarian rule, from 15th till 18th century under Venetian rule and in 18th century after short French rule it got under Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy. Until 15th century Split was autonomous commune. It had Council and Statute from 1312. After World War I Split becomes important administrative, cultural and economy center. In 1925. railroad to Zagreb was finished.

LOCATION AND CLIMATE


Split (Croatia, Central Dalmatia) is the largest city and also a port in Dalmatia. It is a cultural, administrative, traffic and business center of Central Dalmatia. Split is connected with islands, hinterland and other ports. It is connected with hinterland with railway and with ferries with Central Dalmatian islands and Ancona in Italy. Split is second largest city in Croatia, after Zagreb. The airport of Split is located in Resnik. Split is located on peninsula between the Gulf of Kastela and Split Channel. Split has four marinas: Split ACI Marina, sports boats pier Spinut, sports boats marina Poljud, sports boat pier Zenta. The City Port is used only by passenger and ferry traffic. Area around Split has Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild winters. Average summer temperature is 26 °C. Average day in the year lasts about 7 hours and in July 12 hours, so Split is one of the sunniest cities in Europe. Vegetation is Mediterranean type.
